Some Important Things we need to know about Coronavirus

Escaping from Coronavirus infection is the name of the game today in at least 135 countries around the world. And, this is not an easy thing to do in the circumstances we do not know the virus and its behavior.

However, it is very important to learn and understand what we actually know about this terrible virus. That's why I dug around reliable sources to gather already confirmed scientific facts about COVID-19. I'd like to share them with you my friends and to explain how such facts relate to our daily routine. Here I go:

Proven Scientific Facts about Coronavirus

  • Coronavirus is a flu-type virus.
  • There are 18 already known coronaviruses, mainly affected animals.
  • The virus is organized in the shape of a crown, and this is why is called coronavirus.
  • The virus itself is covered by a membrane compounded of fatty composition, which protects the virus from outside factors.
  • The main way for virus spread is from human-to-human through cough and sneezing or touching contaminated hands.
  • It takes up to 14 days for the human body to undergo COVID-19 symptoms.
  • The virus, once thrown in the air could resist up to 3 hours.
  • It lives in the human's hands for up to 10 minutes.
  • The virus could be detected on copper for up to 4 hours.
  • Cardboard surfaces may contain the active virus for 24 hours.
  • The surfaces made of plastic and stainless steel may serve as a shelter for the virus for up to 2 - 3 days long.

It is frightening to read these facts, as we are all surrounded by these materials and can be easily infected. The virus is proven to be very aggressive and quite durable. Thus, we should be very attentive to respecting personal hygiene rules. The two most important are: frequent hand washing (with water & soap and with hand sanitizing gel) and not touching the face with hands. Maintaining high hygiene levels in the place we spend most of our time is vital as well.

Social distancing is the other weapon we have in our hands. Stop meeting people, stop frequenting crowded public places. Whenever getting out of our homes, wear a facial mask and gloves and stay 1.5 meters away from other people. Most countries heavily rely on the so-called "delaying strategy", which is based on the self-isolation of people in their homes for at least 14 days.

Believed Facts, not Scientifically Proven

  • COVID-19 is influenced by the air temperature. Some scientists believe the virus will disappear in temperatures of 30-grade C.
  • It is believed that 80% of infected people will undergo the coronavirus with no clinical symptoms.
  • The spreading rate of the virus is 1 - 2.5 people infected by one already infected person.
  • The death rate of coronavirus is over 1% of the infected population.
  • More than 80% of deaths occur to people over 75 years old.
  • It is believed that half of the existing world population will be infected with COVID-19 this spring.

Some of these facts have been proven by practice in China and other places affected by the pandemic crisis. But, they could not be considered proven scientific facts until humanity ends the war with the virus.
