Canadian Liberals support for Plastic to be classified as Toxic

As promised during their fall campaign, liberals in Canada have introduced a draft-proposal to classify plastics as toxic substances. The regulation is made under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA).     

The ultimate goal is to ban the production of one-time plastics in the country next year (2021). Despite the big debate among the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada and Environmental Associations, this is an important concrete action for the management of plastics waste.

I was very happy to hear such news, as I strongly advocate the need to put under control the amount of plastics waste thrown into the environment. As we all know, plastics are a big part of environmental pollution that is disturbing the planet and our health. The small particles of plastics are attacking human bodies and other creatures' that serve as food for humans. The scientists do not know exactly the influence of such particles on human health, but they strongly believe it is a negative presence.

Environmental activists have done their part to raise awareness of the public to refuse plastics in their daily routine. But, convenience and easy access to plastics in the market has somehow undermined the success of environmental protection campaigns. Thus, the only way to start controlling the situation is to reduce the offer of plastics in the market. 

The move of Canadian liberals to call it toxic substance is quite smart in my opinion. Even though it was chosen as a shorter way to practically approve the new law. In reality, it is very impressive for someone to buy a product with plastic packaging, considering that is called a toxic substance. So, such a change in the law will have a preception shift impact on consumers' minds as well.

Let's hope the new law amendment will be approved within a couple of months and other countries will follow the example of Canada.
