The USA is living the warmest winter ever since the air temperatures are systematically measured.
We have entered the last month of this winter and meteorologist report that this winter so far has been a particular one. They emphasize this is the warmest winter officially register ever. When they say 'ever', it means since Y1895, the time when the air temperatures have started to be consistently measured.
Some data about Winter 2019 - 2020
- The average national temperature for the first two months of winter was 35.95°F, topping the 35.82°F observed in Dec. 2005 – Jan. 2006.
- Across the contiguous U.S., this winter so far is running about 4.5°F warmer than the average winter of the 20th century.
- The nation saw its fifth warmest January on record, following the sixth warmest December.
Let's go back to the map at the beginning of this article. It shows Statewide Rankings for Average Temperature in January 2020 as compared to each January since 1895. Darker shades of orange indicate higher rankings for warmth, with 1 denoting the coldest year on record and 127 the warmest. (NOAA/NCEI).
Interestingly, no single state made it into their top-three-warmest in either December or January. What makes this winter so exceptional isn’t the intensity of the mildness, but rather how widespread and sustained it’s been.
Even though neither month was record-warm on a national or state level, the mild conditions were prolonged enough to top the national list when the two months are combined.
I believe we all can say that this has not been a cold winter. But, we cannot even say that this has been a warm winter until we see reports like this that scientifically prove such fact. We shall wait until the end of February to finally say if this was the warmest winter ever. Till then, be attentive to flu and coronavirus.
