The number of homeless students in the USA has more than doubled during the last decade. Statistics speak for around 1,5 million homeless students counted in 2018 (age 10 -11 years old and 16 - 17 years old).
93% of homeless students stay with other families or friends when lost their homes, while 7% live in abandoned buildings or cars. This situation has made for less than a third of homeless students to be able to read adequately. They scored even lower in mathematics and science, according to a report of the National Centre for Homeless Education.
Why are Students turning into Homeless?
It is often caused by:
- Job insecurity,
- Unaffordable housing,
- Increasing rent prices,
- Domestic violence,
- Opioid crisis,
- Family rejection in cases of LTBG students.
Living without a fixed address has a serious impact on children's education and health.
"Homeless children are in crisis mode, and because they don't have the luxury of focusing on school, they often fall behind," Amanda Clifford, of the National Youth Forum on Homelessness (NYFH), told the BBC.
The research points out that homeless children suffer the consequences of such a difficult situation, even after they find a permanent home.
There is so much state and other organizations can do about this phenomenon. Some measures need to be taken for special care for children undergoing a homeless situation. But, lots to do again even to help parents find ways to afford a regular home for their families. Emergency measures for newly homeless families are not enough to avoid footprints such as experience leaves in children's lives.
