Novel Virus found in a Lake in Brazil

These days we have talked so much about viruses. More than ever before. Exactly in the middle of endless discussions about Corona-virus, some news arrives from Brazil. Scientists have documented a novel virus in January. They named it Yaravirus, as per the name of Yara, the mermaid of a local legend that leads sailors toward death. They unexpectedly came across to the virus at Lake Pampulha, an artificial lake in the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte.

What researchers found about Yaravirus?

The new virus has left scientists 'puzzled' because it doesn't appear to be related to any other viruses in the world.

Over 90% of Yaravirus genes have never been seen before, making it wholly unique. Out of 74 genes in total, only six of those had been recorded in literature before. The rest of the 68 genes have never been seen before, known as orphan genes

Yaravirus was taken from a single-celled creature called amoeba, which live in damp environments. The scientists speculate Yaravirus is the first isolated case of an unknown group of an amoebal virus.

What is important to know is that for now, Yaravirus doesn't appear to pose any threat to humans. For a start, it cannot transfer to humans - but only between amoeba.
However, scientists are working to better understand the virus in order to specify what kind of effects it has to amoebas and other species.

Better worry about Coronavirus

So, the only important virus you might be thinking about right now is COVID-19 (the official name of coronavirus by WHO). With a developing ability to spread very quickly from human-to-human, Hong Kong scientists believe coronavirus has the potential to reach up to 50% of the world population. Let's hope this will not be the case and that the same scientists will be able to create an effective vaccine to protect the world population.

This is the Woman that left Earth for 329 days

Left earth on March 14, 2018, Nasa Astronaut Christina Koch is expected to arrive back on Thursday, February 6. She is the first woman that spent 329 days out on a single spaceflight.

Christina Koch, with the profession flight engineer, became part of this mission together with three other astronauts (two men and a woman). In their historic trip to the station, they have orbited the Earth 5,248 times. She conducted six spacewalks and spent a total of 42 hours and 15 minutes outside the station, the NASA release said.

Apart from the record for the longest spaceflight by a female astronaut, Christina and her colleague Jesicca Meir conducted the first all-female spacewalk outside the International Space Station (October 2019). Expedition 60 Flight Engineer Christina Koch of NASA works inside the Quest joint airlock.Definitely, a woman to be admired for her courage and her achievements. I loved the message she gave to young girls:

"Do what scares you. Everyone should think about what intrigues them and what draws them in. Those things can kind of be scary a little bit, but they usually mean that you're interested. And if it's just outside what you think is attainable for you and you reach it, it really pays off dividends in more ways than one. It can be rewarding for you personally, and it usually means that you're giving something back to the world in the maximum way possible."

Koch said she hopes the record for the longest spaceflight by a female astronaut will be exceeded again as soon as possible because it means "we're continuing to push those boundaries."

Should you like to follow her return, the live coverage will begin at 9 p.m. ET Wednesday, with landing taking place at 3 a.m. Thursday.
I hope everything goes well and finally, Christina and her colleagues will be able to meet their families and collaborators. We shall be looking forward to hearing other impressive achievements from Mrs. Koch in the future.

The Fantastic Seal - An Unusual Researcher in Arctic

Science contributors are always special and dedicated beings. This year, a very unusual researcher was seen in the Arctic waters. It was a hardworking Elephant Seal, who swam for three months in Arctic currents.

The goal of its work was to collect data on ocean temperatures. And our seal, in its unique hat, did excellently complete this work. The data collected from her trip did supply the group of scientists with new data never collected before.

Such data are changing previous theories about ocean temperatures. The seal showed that ocean waters are warmer at the deep part and cooler near the surface. While everyone thought that the situation was the opposite one (oceans were warmer at the surface and colder in depth).

Thanks to our elephant seal, scientists and decision-makers can make better decisions for a safer future of marine fauna.
