The Asian Restaurants get Shark Fins at the Black Market

$1 million shark fins found in hidden boxes in Miami Port, in Florida, USA. Authorities believe they are originated by South America with the destination Asian market.

The cargo of 1,400 pounds of dried shark fins is seized by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. They were packed in 18 boxes and were being transported illegally through the US territory.
Shark fins are known to be used for the preparation of a Chinese cuisine delicacy called, shark fin soup. This is an expensive dish, which costs a lot to the poor sharks too. Illegal shark hunters cut the fins of the sharks while they are still alive. Activists of conservation groups say that these people kill tens of millions of sharks every year, to supply the demand for shark fins.
It is obvious that many Asian Restaurants get supplied with this product illegally. What is surprising is that the final product, the shark fin soup has never been considered an illegal product. And, as long as there will be demand for this product, more and more cargos like this one captured will be found in various ports around the world.
